China and Russia are set to hold joint military drills, dubbed “North-Joint 2024,” in the skies and waters around the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk. The exercises aim to enhance strategic cooperation and joint capabilities to address security threats. Naval and air forces will participate, with China sending naval fleets for a joint maritime patrol and joining Russia’s “Ocean-2024” strategic exercise.
This announcement comes after NATO labeled China an “enabler” of Russia’s war in Ukraine, prompting Beijing to warn against “provoking confrontation.” The drills follow previous joint exercises in July and reflect the deepening ties between China and Russia, who have declared a “no limits” partnership.
The exercises demonstrate the strengthening alliance between China and Russia, who share concerns about “Western hegemony” and US global influence. As Russia’s economic and trade links with China yield results, their military cooperation is likely to continue growing.
