Islamabad( The COW News Digital)OpenAI has announced a major shift in its chatbot strategy: from December 2025 onward, ChatGPT will permit erotic content for age-verified adult users, marking a controversial extension of its “treat adult users like adults” policy.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI CEO Sam Altman explained that once a robust age‐verification system is in place, ChatGPT will relax certain content filters and permit mature roleplay or erotic prompts—only for users who confirm their status as adults.
Altman noted that earlier restrictions on sensitive topics—especially regarding mental health—were introduced to prevent misuse, but also made the chatbot less flexible for many users without mental health concerns. He asserted that new safeguards and detection tools now give OpenAI confidence to carefully relax the rules.

Altman sought to quell alarm by saying OpenAI does not want to act as a “moral police,” but rather to expand user freedom within well-defined safety boundaries. He emphasized that the existing guardrails around self-harm, illegal sexual content, exploitation, non-consensual acts, and minors will remain in force.
Still, the move underscores the ongoing tension in AI between freedom and control. OpenAI had previously come under scrutiny—such as in the wrongful death lawsuit Raine v. OpenAI—over allegations that ChatGPT mishandled a teenager’s mental health crisis.
Supporters argue the change is overdue: many adult users have criticized the chatbot’s earlier rigidity on benign mature content. By giving consenting adults more control—so long as they opt in—OpenAI aims to stay competitive with rivals like Elon Musk’s Grok, which already supports flirtatious AI avatars and sexual content.
