ISLAMABAD: Pakistan marked a significant milestone in its energy sector on Monday when the formal construction phase of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5 (C-5) commenced with the start of concrete pouring.
The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal and Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar.
Notably, the groundbreaking ceremony for the C-5 project was conducted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on July 14, 2023. The plant, which is the largest and most advanced nuclear power project in Pakistan’s history, is being constructed with the Chinese assistance as part of a decades-long collaboration between the two nations.
Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar emphasized the importance of nuclear energy as a clean and economical source of electricity for Pakistan’s energy security. “The addition of C-5 to the national grid will contribute 1,200MW clean energy, increasing Pakistan’s total nuclear energy capacity to 4,760MW,” he stated.
He highlighted the role of nuclear energy in boosting socio-economic development and reducing the country’s reliance on costly fossil fuels. The project is a testament to the long-standing Pak-China friendship, which began in the 1990s and has resulted in the construction of six operational nuclear power plants in Pakistan, all with Chinese support.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ahsan Iqbal, the chief guest, lauded the project as a symbol of Pakistan and China’s strategic partnership. “C-5 will create thousands of jobs for Pakistanis during its construction and provide clean electricity at affordable rates,” he said. He underscored the need for Pakistan to transition into a technology-driven economy, leveraging projects like C-5 to achieve energy independence and economic growth.
The minister also praised the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission for its consistent progress in utilizing nuclear technology for electricity generation. He commended the PAEC’s impeccable safety record, which demonstrates its commitment to the global standards for nuclear safety, environmental protection and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Once completed, the C-5 unit will significantly enhance Pakistan’s energy mix by providing reliable baseload electricity, reducing power shortages, and contributing to environmental sustainability. The project aligns with Pakistan’s vision to combat energy challenges and fulfill its commitments to clean energy initiatives.
The event underscored the collaborative spirit of Pak-China relations and the shared vision of economic and technological advancement, with C-5 serving as a beacon of progress in the country’s energy landscape.
Speaking on the occasion, Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong extended his warm congratulations on the FCD ceremony of the C-5 project and expressed sincere gratitude to the friends of both countries for their long-term promotion of practical cooperation between China and Pakistan.
