Amman (NNI) – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that a ceasefire in Gaza is nearly within reach. Speaking to the media in Jordan, Blinken also mentioned that the US is in contact with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militia and other rebel groups. He emphasized that any reconsideration of sanctions on Syrian rebels would be contingent on their behavior and performance.
Blinken was in Jordan for a meeting of the Arab Contact Group, which included foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain. The meeting focused on calls to halt all military activities in Syria and stressed the need to form an inclusive government representing all factions. The committee reaffirmed that the Golan Heights remains an integral part of Syria.
Syrian opposition commander Ahmad al-Shara stated that any change in Syria would be a major success against Iran’s dangerous regional plans. He also mentioned that Israel’s intervention in Syria is unwarranted, expressing that they do not seek further tensions with Israel, while efforts to restore relations with Russia are ongoing.
