A prominent British newspaper has criticized India’s influence over the International Cricket Council (ICC), accusing the governing body of prioritizing Indian interests at the expense of the sport’s integrity.

The report highlights that the ICC has compromised the credibility of the game to benefit India, alleging that India is using its power to prevent Pakistan from hosting the Champions Trophy final in Lahore. “India’s dominance in cricket is unparalleled in the sports world,” the newspaper stated.

According to the report, the Champions Trophy’s two venues, Pakistan and the UAE, were initially decided, with the final scheduled in Lahore. However, if India reaches the final, it will be shifted to the UAE—a move that undermines fair play. The final venue will not be confirmed until March 4, just five days before the match.

The newspaper criticized the unprecedented power held by a single nation to dictate terms and prevent another country from hosting the final. “This is a disgraceful example of how Indian influence skews the balance in global cricket,” the report added.

Key Allegations Against India:

  1. Hostile Scheduling: During the 2019 World Cup, India delayed its first match for eight days after the tournament began, while other teams like South Africa had already played three matches.
  2. IPL Priority: A 15-day gap was imposed between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international matches to accommodate Indian players.
  3. Favorable Fixtures: India’s final group matches in ICC tournaments are often scheduled against weaker opponents to ensure easier progression.
  4. Strategic Advantages: In the 2022 T20 World Cup, India’s semi-final was held in conditions that suited their playing style, while other teams faced less predictable arrangements.

The report also raised concerns about the upcoming Champions Trophy, where India will only have to prepare for one country’s playing conditions, while the other seven teams must consider the challenges of two different nations.

Fans and organizers in Pakistan, especially in Lahore, remain uncertain about the final, despite extensive preparations. “Since being awarded the 2021 Champions Trophy hosting rights, Pakistan has been subjected to unfair treatment, with India exerting its influence to undermine Pakistan’s efforts,” the report claimed.

The allegations further fuel concerns over the ICC’s perceived favoritism and its impact on the integrity of global cricket tournaments.
