Islamabad: A breakthrough has been achieved in the issue of madrasah registration, with the government agreeing to all the demands of the Ittehad Tanzeemat-e-Madaris.
According to sources, the breakthrough occurred during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). The government has assured that madrasah registration will be conducted under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.
Sources further indicate that a notification for the bill, passed in light of the 26th constitutional amendment, will be issued in the coming days.
Earlier, Maulana Fazlur Rehman had met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the madrasah registration bill. After the meeting, Fazlur Rehman spoke to the media, stating that they had received a very positive response to their stance. He added that the Prime Minister had instructed the Ministry of Law to take immediate action in line with the law and constitution. He expressed hope that the actions taken would be in accordance with their demands.
Fazlur Rehman also noted that the Prime Minister had spoken with good intentions and hoped the matter would be resolved without the need for a joint parliamentary session. He confirmed that all of their concerns were met with a positive response.
It is noteworthy that the President of Pakistan had raised objections to the madrasah registration bill, passed by Parliament, citing potential risks associated with madrasahs being registered under the Societies Act. He expressed concerns that such a move could lead to restrictions from international bodies like FATF and GSP, and reduce the effectiveness of the law.
Previously, the Ittehad Tanzeemat-e-Madaris and the Federation of Madrasahs had demanded immediate notification of the bill, stressing that any delay or hindrance in addressing the issues of madrasahs was unacceptable.
