Brussels( The COW News Digital) In an unprecedented move, King Philippe of Belgium has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling it a “shame for humanity.” The remarks, delivered during his national address on Belgium’s National Day, mark one of the rare instances where the Belgian monarch has publicly taken a position on a global political conflict.

King Philippe, who traditionally refrains from commenting on international disputes, broke royal protocol to express deep concern over what he described as “grave violations of human rights” in the besieged Palestinian enclave.

“I stand with all voices denouncing the severe human rights violations in Gaza,” the monarch said in a televised speech from the Royal Palace in Brussels. “Innocent people are starving, bombed, and trapped. This conflict has dragged on for far too long. It is a disgrace to humanity.”

He added, “I fully support the United Nations Secretary-General’s call to bring this unbearable crisis to an immediate end.”

His statement comes at a time when Belgium’s federal government has maintained a cautious stance on the conflict, often opting for diplomatic restraint in international forums. King Philippe’s intervention signals a significant shift in tone from the Belgian establishment, drawing attention to the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

According to international agencies, Israel’s ongoing military offensive since October 2023 has led to the deaths of more than 60,000 Palestinians and has injured over 125,000. The relentless airstrikes have not only devastated Gaza but have also expanded into neighboring countries including Lebanon, Syria, and Iran.

Targeted attacks have reportedly killed top Hamas and Hezbollah leadership as well as high-ranking Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. These aggressive military operations have triggered global outrage, but few international leaders of royal stature have spoken out so explicitly—until now.

King Philippe’s comments have been widely viewed as a moral appeal, aiming to shake the conscience of the global community. Human rights organizations have welcomed the statement, urging other Western leaders to follow suit.

With civilian casualties mounting and humanitarian aid blocked from entering Gaza, the monarch’s words carry significant diplomatic weight, potentially influencing future European Union discussions on the crisis.
