Islamabad: Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stated that he had one meeting with the Army Chief during which security issues in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were discussed.
Speaking to the media outside the Election Commission, the PTI Chairman emphasized the importance of serious negotiations, stating, “Negotiations are crucial for the people, democracy, and Pakistan. Irresponsible individuals should not derail the process.”
He further pointed out that PTI was the only party that held intra-party elections, but claimed that the party has yet to receive a certificate for the completion of its intra-party elections.
“PTI is the sixth-largest political party in the world,” Gohar added, noting that the five petitioners who had opposed the intra-party elections had not even participated in them.
On constitutional matters, the PTI Chairman mentioned the 26th Amendment, which specifies that the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission remain in office after retirement until their successors are appointed. He noted that, while it is customary for the Prime Minister to initiate appointments to the Election Commission, this had not yet occurred.
He explained that PTI had written to form a parliamentary committee to resolve the deadlock over the appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and other members, as it was unlikely that an agreement could be reached between the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader. Gohar expressed hope that the parliamentary committee would be established soon to make these appointments.
