The country’s army chief, Wakeruz Zaman, announced on state television that an interim government will be formed to take over the reins.

The protests, led by student groups, began in late July and initially demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs. However, they soon escalated into a broader movement seeking Hasina’s ouster. Despite a nationwide curfew, protesters continued to take to the streets, leading to deadly clashes.

The army chief called for an end to the violence and promised that the new government would ensure justice for those killed during the protests. Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country mark a significant turning point in the crisis.
