Bangladesh has imposed a curfew and deployed military forces as police failed to quell deadly unrest that has spread across the country. At least 105 people have been killed in clashes between student demonstrators and police this week.
The government has banned all public gatherings and imposed an internet shutdown to prevent further violence. Despite this, protests continue, with students demanding an end to a quota system that reserves civil service posts for specific groups.
The UN human rights chief has condemned the attacks on student protesters as “shocking and unacceptable” and called for impartial investigations. The opposition has accused the government of misusing state institutions to entrench its hold on power and stamp out dissent.
The protests have sparked a national crisis, with nearly half of Bangladesh’s districts reporting clashes. The internet shutdown has raised concerns over public safety, with little news flowing in or out of the country.
