Aubrey Plaza mourns husband Jeff Baena’s death in heartfelt statement

Aubrey Plaza has issued a heartfelt statement following the death of her husband, Jeff Baena.

The filmmaker, 47, was found deceased in a Los Angeles residence on January 3, with the L.A. County Coroner’s Office confirming the cause of death as suicide.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support,” Plaza and the Baena and Stern family said in a joint statement on Monday. “Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Baena, a celebrated indie filmmaker, was best known for his work on projects such as I Heart Huckabees, The Little Hours, and Life After Beth, which starred Plaza. The couple, who began dating in 2011 and married in May 2021, also collaborated on Spin Me Round and the series Cinema Toast, marking Plaza’s directorial debut.

Plaza had previously reflected on their shared career paths, noting that working in the same industry brought understanding to their relationship. In a 2019 interview with People, she shared, “You are able to support each other and really understand the journey we’re both on. It’s all about balance.”

Baena’s death has left a void in both the film industry and his loved ones’ lives. Fans and colleagues have expressed their condolences, honoring his creative contributions and enduring impact on independent cinema.
