Istanbul: Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar has proposed the creation of a joint social media regulatory framework during his address at the StartCom Summit in Istanbul.

Speaking at the event, Tarar highlighted Pakistan’s robust digital landscape, stating that the country has over 110 million internet users, with a significant proportion of its population comprising skilled and talented youth.

“Our young people are hardworking and capable, and we must ensure the effective use of artificial intelligence to harness their potential,” he said.

Tarar also shed light on global efforts to regulate social media, emphasizing the need for fair and inclusive policies. “Worldwide, social media is being regulated. In Pakistan, we face restrictions even in mentioning names like Kashmiri activist Burhan Wani or discussing atrocities in Gaza,” he remarked.

The proposal for a unified regulatory framework comes amidst growing concerns over the impact of digital platforms on freedom of expression and global narratives. Tarar’s speech underscored the need for collaboration to address these challenges while empowering youth and leveraging technology for growth.
