Foreign media reports indicate that the Madani Mosque, located in the Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, was demolished following the expiry of a stay order issued by the High Court. This action took place after investigations into certain alleged irregularities that began on December 18, 2024.
According to Indian media reports, authorities deemed the Madani Mosque an illegal structure after reviewing its legal status, prompting the Muslim community to approach the High Court, which granted a stay until February 8, 2025. However, as soon as the stay period ended, the mosque was razed on February 9 in the presence of a heavy police contingent.
Given the potential for unrest during the demolition, stringent security measures were implemented in the area, with a significant number of police forces and administrative officials present at the site.
Officials stated that the action was carried out in accordance with legal requirements and emphasized the measures taken to maintain peace and order in the region.
The Muslim community expressed strong discontent over the local administration’s actions following the mosque’s demolition and indicated plans to take the matter back to court.
It is noteworthy that this is not the first instance of such an event in Uttar Pradesh; the local administration previously declared the historical Fatehpur Nuri Mosque, built in 1839, as illegal and subsequently demolished it.
Indian media reports claim that the authorities stated part of the mosque was built on a road, and bulldozers were deployed to remove encroachments from the area.
