“Allah Saved Me, I Was on the Brink of Death,” Says Sheikh Hasina in Audio Statement

New Delhi: Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and leader of the Awami League, reflected on her narrow escape from an assassination attempt in July last year, stating that “only Allah saved us” and that there was no opportunity to survive otherwise.

In an audio statement released in Bengali, Hasina expressed her gratitude, saying, “I believe that Allah saved my life. Maybe He has bigger plans for me.” She referred to past attacks on her life, including the 2004 grenade attack on a rally and a bombing attempt in 2000, attributing her survival to divine intervention.

She mentioned that in the most recent attempt, they narrowly escaped death by just 20 to 25 minutes. “It was Allah’s will, and I believe He saved me for a purpose,” she added, acknowledging that without His mercy, she would have had no chance to survive.

The 77-year-old leader also accused her political opponents in Bangladesh of plotting her murder to silence her voice. “The world knows now how they conspired to kill me, but I survived, and I believe Allah still has more work for me to do,” she stated.

Hasina, who is currently in India after fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024 amid student-led protests against her government, also expressed the personal toll these events had taken on her, saying, “I am in a very difficult situation. I have no home, no country, everything is in ruins.”

The former prime minister was forced to leave her official residence after being warned by Bangladesh’s security forces that her life was in danger as protesters moved toward the Prime Minister’s House. She later fled to India with her sister, Rehana Sheikh, after violent protests led to the torching of key sites, including the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Museum.

Currently, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, supported by Bangladesh’s armed forces, has taken charge and is pressing for Hasina’s return to Bangladesh.
