In the wake of the court’s decision against Imran Khan, PTI founder’s sister Alima Khan stated that the family had known for a month that a sentence would be handed down.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Alima Khan expressed disappointment with the judicial system, stating that the events of the day mirrored past occurrences. She pointed out that Imran Khan had previously faced similar sentences, which were overturned by the High Court.
She further criticized the judge who delivered the sentence, suggesting that the judge may have been under pressure or perhaps sought personal advancement. Alima Khan emphasized that the case involved the establishment of a university, a vision of Imran Khan’s, and expressed that the ruling was a direct punishment for his dream project. She confirmed that PTI would challenge the decision in the High Court.
Alima Khan also shared a message from Imran Khan, who encouraged the family to remain strong, asserting that punishment and reward are not in the hands of others.
Barrister Ali Zafar: We Are Not Surprised, Only Saddened
PTI leader Barrister Ali Zafar also commented on the verdict, stating that while Bushra Bibi had been sentenced and arrested, the verdict would likely be suspended soon. Zafar termed the case as fabricated and stressed that the punishment was expected, given that courts were being manipulated.
He expressed sorrow rather than surprise at the decision, claiming that the judicial system had been compromised. Zafar dismissed the allegation that Imran Khan had benefited from any crime, arguing that there was no evidence to support such claims. He added that the court itself had not been able to prove that the funds were linked to criminal activity.
The PTI leader further noted that previous convictions, such as those in the Toshakhana and disqualification cases, had been overturned quickly, and confirmed that the party would challenge this latest ruling in the High Court on Monday.
