Lahore ( The COW News Digital)Police in Lahore have arrested Shah Riaz Azeem, the son of Aliema Khan, in connection with the violent incidents of May 9, which shook Pakistan’s political and security landscape. Authorities allege that Azeem was directly involved in anti-state activities during the unrest and had been wanted by the police for several months.
According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Investigations, the accused was named in multiple May 9 cases and was actively evading law enforcement. The DIG confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and will be produced in court later today. Officials say that Azeem will face legal proceedings under charges of participating in rioting, property damage, and actions deemed hostile to the state.
The May 9 violence followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, triggering widespread protests that turned violent in various cities, particularly Lahore. Several public and private properties were set ablaze, while clashes between protesters and security forces left the country in turmoil. The events prompted the government to vow strict action against those allegedly responsible.
Police officials maintain that Shah Riaz Azeem’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough in their ongoing crackdown. “Anyone involved in anti-state activities will not be spared,” said the DIG, stressing that the law applies equally to all citizens regardless of their political or social status.
The DIG further stated that no leniency will be shown toward individuals accused of undermining the state. “Those who incite violence and engage in destructive activities must face justice. The process of accountability is essential to ensure peace and order,” he added.
Legal experts suggest that Azeem’s arrest could have broader political repercussions, particularly due to his family connections. His mother, Aliema Khan, is widely recognized for her close ties to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Analysts believe that this development could add further strain to the party’s already embattled position amid increasing pressure from the state.
The court appearance scheduled for today is expected to shed light on the formal charges and the prosecution’s case. Observers anticipate that the proceedings will be closely monitored by political figures, human rights groups, and the international community, given the sensitivity of the May 9 incidents and their aftermath.
For now, law enforcement authorities remain firm: accountability for May 9 is far from over, and arrests will continue as investigations progress.
