Afghanistan: Senior officials from educational institutions providing nursing and midwifery courses in Afghanistan have reported that the Taliban have ordered the closure of these courses. According to international news agencies, women will soon be prohibited from undertaking various courses in the health sector under the order of the Taliban’s supreme leader. During a meeting in Kabul with the directors of such educational institutions, Taliban authorities indicated that, under the Amir’s order, women would be banned from pursuing public health-related courses. An official from the Ministry of Public Health told AFP that the directors of educational institutions were not informed about the rationale or details of the ban during the meeting; however, they were instructed for immediate implementation once the order was issued. A senior employee of an educational center confirmed to AFP that the Taliban has informed about the ban on nursing and midwifery courses. It is noteworthy that since the establishment of the Taliban government, there have been restrictions on girls’ secondary education and women’s employment in Afghanistan.
