Today marks the final day for registration in the Free Solar Panel Scheme, which aims to provide solar systems to 100,000 households at no cost. The initiative, with an estimated budget of 10 billion rupees, is part of the Punjab government’s efforts to offer lasting relief from electricity bills.
Under the scheme, households using up to 200 units of electricity per month will be eligible for the solar panel systems. A total of 100,000 solar systems, including 550W and 1,100W panels, will be distributed across the province. The recipients will be selected through a lottery system in June 2024, after which the solar panels will be installed at their homes.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the provision of solar panels will bring significant relief to the public in terms of electricity bills, and will transform Punjab into a hub for renewable energy. She also highlighted the gradual transition of agricultural tubewells to solar energy.
In addition to solar initiatives, the provincial government plans to distribute 100,000 e-bikes to students, and introduce e-buses to revolutionize traditional transportation systems.
Citizens wishing to register for the free solar system can do so through the online portal or by sending their CNIC number to 8800.
