Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Tanveer Hassan has stated that the government is not under any external pressure, including from the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan. He also emphasized that action should have been taken during the 2014 protests and similarly, decisions regarding the May 9 incidents should have been made earlier.
In a conversation on Express News’ program Centre Stage, PTI leader Rauf Hassan mentioned that while negotiations with the government have begun, recent developments, including a press conference by the DG ISPR, have not been conducive to creating a favorable environment for dialogue. He stated that there is a significant gap between where the government and PTI stand, and it would take a few sessions of talks to determine how serious the government is in resolving the issues.
Rana Tanveer further clarified that there is no pressure from external sources on the government or PTI. Referring to military courts, he dismissed external criticism, asserting that military courts are operating within the legal and constitutional framework. He emphasized that political issues should be resolved through dialogue.
Regarding the ongoing civil disobedience movement and negotiations, he pointed out that while negotiations are underway, the civil disobedience movement continues independently, with the law taking its own course.
Security expert Ehsan Masood Tipu shared insights on the challenges facing both provincial and federal governments in the peace agreement in Kurram. The main obstacle is the resistance from two major tribes in the region, who are reluctant to sign the agreement. He added that the government has requested more time for consultations before a new session is held to address the tribal concerns.
