Islamabad: In a significant move to enhance internet speeds, Pakistan is set to connect its cable with a new, 45,000-kilometer long undersea internet cable passing through Africa. The new cable, which is capable of transferring data at speeds of up to 180 terabits per second, is expected to greatly improve the overall internet speed, including social media apps.
This development comes amid growing criticism over the country’s internet speed. Recently, Minister of State for Information Technology, Shiza Fatima, acknowledged that Pakistan’s internet speed does not meet global standards.
The issue of slow internet speeds was also raised by the opposition during a National Assembly session, where PPP lawmakers criticized the government’s digital policies. Member of Parliament Shazia Mari objected to the Digital Nation Bill, stating that claims of digital progress were absurd given the poor internet speeds.
The new cable connection is expected to promote digital growth in Pakistan and provide internet users with faster and more stable connectivity.
