ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman clarified on Monday that no Virtual Private Network (VPN) has been blocked in the country, nor does the authority intend to do so.
Speaking at the launch of PTA’s Annual Report 2024, the chairman reiterated, “We have said before that we can block VPNs, but we will not do so. To date, no VPN has been blocked.”
Addressing concerns about internet shutdowns, Hafeez-ur-Rehman stated, “The era of concealing information is over. When people ask about internet suspensions on the grounds of national security, we often don’t have a concrete answer.”
He emphasized that questions regarding national security-related decisions, such as internet restrictions, should be directed towards policymakers rather than the PTA.
