DAMASCUS: Syrian rebels have reportedly entered the capital, Damascus, with sightings in the Harasta district, according to international media reports.

Despite fierce clashes with government forces, the rebels have continued their rapid advance, capturing four major cities—Daraa, Quneitra, Suwayda, and Homs—within the last 24 hours.

In Homs, rebels stormed a prison, releasing hundreds of detainees. Following the withdrawal of government troops, thousands of residents took to the streets, chanting slogans like “Assad is gone, Homs is free” and “Long live Syria.”

U.S. officials have indicated that President Bashar al-Assad may have fled the country, though this has been denied by the presidential palace.

In a symbolic act near Damascus, rebels toppled a statue of former President Hafez al-Assad as protesters chanted against the Assad regime.

According to foreign news agencies, Syrian soldiers have been seen fleeing toward Iraq, signaling the collapse of government defenses in some areas.
