Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has approved the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities Amendment Bill 2024.”

Introduced by Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan, the bill was passed unanimously.

Under the amendment, the Chief Minister will serve as the Chancellor of all public sector universities in the province. Additionally, the Chief Minister will have the authority to appoint Vice Chancellors, based on a shortlist of three candidates provided by an Academic Search Committee.

Key provisions of the bill include setting the tenure of Vice Chancellors at four years, subject to evaluation by a government-formed monitoring committee. The committee will assess the performance of Vice Chancellors, with tenures potentially ending if performance falls below 65%.

The bill also stipulates that only women can be appointed as Vice Chancellors of women’s universities.

This legislation aims to enhance accountability and streamline governance in the province’s higher education sector.
