ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) played a crucial role in providing comprehensive support to law enforcement agencies in countering what he described as a “Lashkar” (militant force) that attempted to besiege the federal capital.
Speaking during a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister commended the security forces, including police, Rangers, and intelligence agencies, for their coordinated efforts in preventing further chaos in Islamabad.
“Yesterday, a well-coordinated attack on the capital was thwarted. The situation was critical, but thanks to the full cooperation of our armed forces, especially the army chief, the assault was effectively repelled,” the prime minister said.
He underscored the unprecedented nature of the situation, noting that such an attack on Islamabad, the seat of government, would have been unthinkable in the past. “The army chief and our intelligence agencies worked closely with law enforcement to defend the capital, ensuring that the attackers were pushed back and their plans defeated.”
Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that political stability is essential for economic growth and criticized the perpetrators of the unrest for attempting to derail the country’s progress. He also highlighted the economic toll of the unrest, warning that such actions could further destabilize Pakistan’s fragile economy.
“The time has come for the nation to decide: Do we want prosperity and development or to remain mired in political chaos and instability?” the prime minister concluded.
