A 19-year-old resident of Karachi’s East district has succumbed to the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, bringing the total number of deaths to five in Sindh this year. The victim was admitted to the hospital for 12 days with severe symptoms before passing away.
The Sindh Health Department has reported four deaths in Karachi and one in Hyderabad due to Naegleria. The advisory issued by the National Institute of Health (NIH) warns that cases and deaths due to Naegleria have been reported in Pakistan since 2008, with symptoms including high fever, headache, vomiting, and neck stiffness.
The NIH advisory emphasizes the importance of ensuring adequate chlorine levels in water, especially during high temperatures, to prevent the spread of Naegleria. The water supply department has been advised to take necessary measures to add the prescribed amount of chlorine to the water.
