The Oil Marketing Association of Pakistan (OMAP) has urged the federal government to immediately ban the illegal import and distribution of a harmful solvent mixed with petroleum products, causing damage to automobile engines. OMAP Chairman Tariq Wazir Ali expressed grave concerns about the illegal imports, stating that the solvent is extensively used in petrol adulteration, leading to significant repercussions for the industry and the country.
The customs authorities have confiscated around 900 tankers of the hydrocarbon solvent, but it was later released after the involvement of the Ministry of Petroleum. The OMAP highlighted five major concerns:
- Adulterated fuel sold at illegal fuel stations tarnishes the reputation of legitimate oil companies.
- Adulteration is undetectable, making it a silent threat to fuel quality.
- Environmental impact is unknown but likely detrimental.
- Negative effect on combustion engines, potentially leading to engine failures.
- Infiltration of adulterated fuel causes revenue loss to the government.
The OMAP emphasized that the government must take immediate action to ban the illegal solvent to protect the industry, consumers, and national interests.
