The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has defended its Emmy nomination of a video report from Gaza, despite criticism from a nonprofit group that accused the journalist of having ties to a terrorist organization. The report, “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive,” was filmed and narrated by Bisan Owda and produced by AJ+, the digital publisher of Al Jazeera.

Creative Community for Peace, a nonprofit that opposes antisemitism and cultural boycotts of Israel, published an open letter asking the academy to rescind the nomination, citing Owda’s alleged affiliation with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which the US and EU consider a terrorist group.

However, the academy’s president and CEO, Adam Sharp, defended the nomination, stating that the selection process involved experienced journalists and no evidence of Owda’s current affiliation with the PFLP was found.

The controversy highlights the challenges of reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the need for nuanced and balanced storytelling.
