Pakistan is currently experiencing countrywide slow internet speeds, leaving many frustrated users wondering what’s behind the issue. According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman, the culprit is a faulty submarine cable.
The PTA chairman recently briefed a senate committee on the matter, attributing the slow internet speeds to technical issues with the submarine cable. However, some senators expressed skepticism, questioning whether the issue was more complex than just a simple technical problem.
Senator Sharmila Farooqi pressed the PTA chairman for a clear answer on whether a firewall had been installed, which could be contributing to the slow speeds. The chairman denied any involvement by the PTA in the internet slowdown, insisting that it was solely due to technical issues.
Other senators highlighted the impact of the slow internet speeds on businesses and the country’s progress. Senator Mustafa Kamal noted that companies were being advised not to conduct business in Pakistan due to the internet issues, while Senator Barrister Gohar Ali Khan questioned the prolonged ban on social media platform X.
The PTA chairman admitted that he had no further information on the ban, leading the committee to express their opposition to such restrictions. They also requested a briefing on Islamabad and Karachi IT parks.
Despite the assurances that the internet issues would be resolved by August 27, many Pakistanis remain frustrated with the slow speeds. The chairman’s admission that VPNs are not being blocked in the country has done little to alleviate concerns.
As Pakistan strives to advance its digital landscape, the ongoing internet issues are a significant hindrance. The committee’s chairman, Amin ul Haq, urged the government to ensure that 5G services are available in Pakistan by March, warning that failure to do so would disappoint public expectations.
