Imane Khelif, Algeria’s first Olympic gold medalist in women’s boxing, has filed a criminal complaint in France against X (unknown persons) for alleged cyber-harassment. The lawsuit names JK Rowling, Elon Musk, and potentially Donald Trump, among others, for their alleged roles in the misogynistic, racist, and sexist cyberbullying Khelif faced after her Olympic win.
Khelif’s lawyer, Nabil Boudi, stated that the complaint aims to investigate and prosecute all individuals involved in the cyberbullying, including those who wrote hateful messages under pseudonyms. The lawsuit claims that Khelif was subjected to online abuse, particularly on X, after high-profile figures like Rowling and Musk posted about the issue, escalating the situation.
Rowling had posted a picture from Khelif’s fight, implying that Khelif was a man, while Musk shared a post saying “men don’t belong in women’s sports.” Trump also posted a picture from the fight, saying “I will keep men out of women’s sports!”
Khelif’s coach, Pedro Diaz, described the bullying as “incredibly affecting” and “disgusting.” Khelif herself stated, “I am fully qualified to take part in this competition. I’m a woman like any other woman… [The detractors] are enemies of success.”
