The federal and provincial governments have issued threat alerts about possible attacks on press clubs across Pakistan, prompting measures to ensure the safety of members and media entities. The Lahore Press Club has disclosed this development through a notice, banning the entry of non-members and urging cooperation with management.
Similarly, the National Press Club in Islamabad has decided to close by midnight, setting aside its tradition of staying open throughout the night. The threat alerts have caused concern among journalists and media personnel, highlighting the need for increased security measures.
In a separate development, four senior journalists – Aamir Latif, Bachal Leghari, Nasir Zaidi, and Moin Azhar – have been nominated as members of the Press Council of Pakistan for a three-year term. They will serve from August 2, 2024, to August 2027.
The threat alerts and nominations come at a critical time for press freedom in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of a safe and secure environment for journalists to perform their duties.
