The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reinstated the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to conduct a vote recount in three National Assembly (NA) constituencies, overturning the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) previous ruling. The three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, delivered the ruling with a 2-1 majority, with Justice Aqeel Abbasi dissenting.

The decision pertains to the recount of votes in NA-154, NA-81, and NA-79, and reinstates the victory notifications of PML-N candidates Azhar Qayum Nahra, Abdul Rehman Kanju, and Zulfiqar Ahmed. The recount request was filed by the PML-N candidates after independent candidates affiliated with PTI were initially declared successful in the general elections.

The ECP had declared the PML-N candidates as winners after the recount, but the LHC annulled the commission’s ruling and reinstated the original winners. The PML-N members then appealed the LHC’s decision to the SC, which has now upheld the ECP’s decision.
