In a humanitarian gesture, President Asif Zardari has announced a 90-day reduction in sentences for select prisoners on the eve of Independence Day. The reduction, granted under Article 45 of the Constitution, applies to various categories of inmates, excluding those convicted of serious crimes.
Eligible prisoners include:
- -Male inmates over 65 years who have served at least one-third of their sentences
- -Women aged 60 and above who have served one-third of their sentence
- -Women incarcerated with children who have served one-third of their sentence
- -Inmates under the age of 18 who have completed one-third of their imprisonment
The sentence reduction does not apply to those convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, or serious crimes such as adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism.
This presidential clemency reflects a compassionate approach, focusing on the elderly, women with children, and juveniles, while excluding those convicted of heinous crimes.
