Ismail Haniyeh, the exiled political chief of Hamas, has been killed in Iran’s capital Tehran, according to Iranian State TV and a statement from Hamas. The Palestinian group accused Israel of responsibility for the “treacherous Zionist raid” on Haniyeh’s residence, where he was staying to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Haniyeh, who had spent much of his time in Qatar in recent years, played a key role in ceasefire talks during the Israel-Gaza war and maintained close ties with Iran, Hamas’s main ally. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the incident and stated that an Iranian bodyguard was also targeted.
Israel has not commented on the killing, but Hamas has directly accused the country of responsibility. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Israel claiming to have carried out a targeted strike against a Hezbollah commander in Beirut earlier this week.
