Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been transferred from Adiala jail to Lahore, where he will appear before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in connection with the May 9 riots cases. Qureshi was transferred amid tight security to Lahore, where he will be produced before the ATC established in Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Multiple cases related to the May 9 riots have been lodged against Qureshi in Lahore. His lawyer, Barrister Taimur Malik, confirmed that the ATC judges will hear the cases in Kot Lakhpat Jail, and Qureshi will appear in court today.
Qureshi is already imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail in multiple cases and was implicated in eight additional cases related to the May 9 mayhem on May 26. He was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the cipher case on January 30.
The May 9 riots were triggered by the arrest of deposed Prime Minister Imran Khan, and hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were arrested for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations. The military termed May 9 “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.
