TRINBAGO ( The COW News Digital) Pakistan opened their three-match ODI series against the West Indies with an impressive five-wicket victory on Saturday, chasing down a competitive 281-run target with an over to spare.
The match, played in Truroba, saw debutant Hassan Nawaz make an immediate impact with a brilliant half-century, earning him the Player of the Match award. His composed 63 runs off 54 balls, coupled with a crucial century partnership with Hussain Talat, set the foundation for Pakistan’s win.
Chasing the West Indies’ total, Pakistan’s innings was anchored by captain Mohammad Rizwan, who scored a steady 53 runs, and Babar Azam, who contributed 47. Hussain Talat added a valuable 41, while Salman Agha chipped in with 23. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Pakistan maintained control of the chase, crossing the target in the 49th over with five wickets in hand.
Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and opted to field first. West Indies posted 280 runs before being bowled out in the 49th over. Evin Lewis top-scored with 60 runs, while captain Shai Hope added 55 and Roston Chase contributed 53. Contributions from Gudakesh Motie (31) and Sherfane Rutherford (10) helped the hosts reach a competitive total, but they struggled to build big partnerships against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling.
Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets in a devastating spell. Naseem Shah supported well with three scalps, while Saim Ayub, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Salman Agha picked up one wicket each.
The West Indies innings lost momentum in the death overs, and Pakistan capitalized by keeping the run rate under control. In reply, Pakistan’s batting lineup showed maturity and patience, ensuring the chase stayed on track.
