Mumbai( The COW News Digital) Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently shared a humorous and nostalgic anecdote about how legendary Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad’s iconic six in the 1986 Sharjah match against India overshadowed one of the most important days of his life — his wedding.
In a candid interview with an Indian digital platform, Aamir Khan opened up about his first marriage to Reena Dutta and the chaos surrounding it. The actor revealed that he was just 21 when he and Reena decided to get married secretly through court, without informing their families.
“We decided to go for a quiet legal marriage and keep it hidden for a few years. The legal notice matured around April 15 or 16, and we eventually got married on April 18, 1986,” Aamir recalled.
What makes this date iconic is that it was the same day when Javed Miandad hit the historic last-ball six off Indian bowler Chetan Sharma in the final of the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah, leading Pakistan to a dramatic win over India.
“After the court marriage, we both went back to our homes, nervous about how to explain our whereabouts. But to our surprise, no one questioned us because everyone was glued to the TV, watching the India-Pakistan match,” Aamir laughed.
He said he too joined the family in watching the match. “We were doing well, and I was thrilled — it was my wedding day, and we were about to beat Pakistan. Then suddenly, Miandad hit that six, and everything went downhill. I was heartbroken.”
Years later, Aamir bumped into Miandad on a flight and finally got a chance to share this personal cricket-related heartbreak with him. “I told him, ‘Javed Bhai, you ruined my wedding!’ He laughed and asked how, so I explained how that one shot had left me depressed on my big day.”
Miandad’s last-ball six on April 18, 1986, remains one of the most memorable moments in cricket history, celebrated across generations in Pakistan.
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were married until 2002. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and the couple separated in 2021.
