Islamabad(TheCOWNews Digital)The Government of Pakistan has announced a fresh increase in the prices of petroleum products for the next 15 days, further burdening consumers already grappling with high inflation. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the prices of both petrol and diesel have been raised significantly, effective immediately.

As per the official announcement, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs 4.80 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs 258.43 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of high-speed diesel has been hiked by Rs 7.95 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs 262.59 per litre.

The government attributes the price adjustment to fluctuations in international oil markets, as well as the impact of the exchange rate. The Finance Ministry stated that the revision is in line with global oil trends and necessary to maintain economic stability and ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the country.

This latest price increase follows several similar adjustments in recent months, as Pakistan continues to implement economic reforms under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) framework. The measures, while aimed at stabilizing fiscal conditions, have sparked public discontent, with many citizens struggling to cope with rising costs of living.

The surge in fuel prices is expected to have a ripple effect on transportation costs, food prices, and overall inflation. Public transport fares are likely to rise, and logistics-related sectors are expected to pass the added costs onto consumers.

Economists have warned that repeated hikes in fuel prices could hamper economic recovery and further pressure household budgets. “While aligning with international prices is necessary, the government must also provide relief mechanisms for low-income groups,” said economic analyst Dr. Farooq Ahmad.

Opposition parties have criticized the government’s decision, accusing it of failing to protect the common man. “This increase reflects the administration’s inability to manage the economy. The poor will pay the price,” said an opposition spokesperson.

Despite public backlash, officials insist that the adjustments are unavoidable under current economic conditions. The government has urged citizens to conserve energy and avoid unnecessary fuel consumption.

The revised fuel prices will remain in effect until the next bi-weekly review scheduled at the end of the month.
