Washington(TheCOWNews Digital) U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that it is possible for the United States to become involved in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. Speaking off-camera to senior ABC journalist Rachel Scott, Trump said, “It’s possible we get involved,” though he clarified that the U.S. is not currently engaged in any military operations.

The comments come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following intense missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. The former president suggested that American involvement could be inevitable if the conflict continues to escalate, but stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts.

Trump expressed openness to a potential mediation effort led by Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that he would “welcome” Putin’s role as a mediator if it leads to de-escalation. “If Putin can help prevent a wider war, I’m open to that,” Trump said.

He also revealed that negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program are ongoing and implied that the current military pressure on Iran might make Tehran more willing to reach an agreement. “There’s a better chance now they’ll want a deal,” Trump suggested.

The president drew parallels between the Iran-Israel situation and the peace dialogue he claims to have facilitated between India and Pakistan during his presidency. He referenced the use of trade leverage and quick decision-making by both nations’ leaders in achieving a temporary de-escalation. “I used trade as a reason. Two great leaders made fast decisions and it stopped,” he said.

Tensions soared in the region after Israel launched major strikes on Iran early Friday, prompting a retaliatory wave of missile attacks from Tehran. In light of the rising violence, Iran canceled its sixth scheduled round of nuclear talks with the U.S., which had been previously agreed upon.

Trump, posting on his social media platform Truth Social, said multiple meetings and phone calls were ongoing between high-level officials in an effort to avoid further conflict. He predicted that Iran and Israel would eventually reach an agreement. “There will be peace, like I did with India and Pakistan,” he wrote.

While no official response has come from the Biden administration, Trump’s comments are expected to add pressure on U.S. policymakers as global powers assess their roles in what many fear could become a wider regional war.
