Gujranwala: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated an investigation against 20 of its officers in connection with the tragic boat accident in Morocco.

According to an FIA spokesperson, the agency’s personnel are suspected of facilitating the clearance of victims involved in the boat tragedy at airports. Investigations have been launched against 8 officers posted at Faisalabad Airport.

Additionally, 6 officers each from Karachi and Lahore airports are also under investigation.

The FIA revealed that Mauritania has become the third major route for human trafficking, following Turkey and Libya. Traffickers had established operations in Mauritania in March 2024, setting up the first “safe houses” in June and starting to move people out.

From Pakistan, victims were transported via air to Senegal and then by land to Mauritania. From there, they were taken by sea to Morocco, with the final destination being an island off the coast of Spain.

The FIA also noted that the key figure in the Greece boat tragedy had arrived in Mauritania, with one of the suspects involved in the incident fleeing Libya. Several traffickers linked to the July 2023 boat disaster have also moved to Mauritania, where some Pakistanis are still being held in safe houses.

Many Pakistanis in Mauritania are still attempting to reach Spain through the Morocco route.
