Hafeez Jalandhari, the revered poet who wrote Pakistan’s national anthem, is being remembered on his 42nd death anniversary. Born on January 14, 1900, in Jalandhar, India, he migrated to Lahore after the creation of Pakistan. His poetry and literary contributions continue to serve as a guiding light for generations.
Hafeez Jalandhari’s works were rich with themes of patriotism, romanticism, and Islamic history. His famous poem “Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon” gained nationwide fame after being sung by Malika Pukhraj. In addition to numerous iconic ghazals and poems, he also authored several books, solidifying his place in Urdu literature.
In 1949, a competition was held to select Pakistan’s national anthem, with entries from 723 poets. Hafeez Jalandhari’s submission was chosen, and his Qaumi Tarana remains a defining symbol of Pakistan’s identity.
In recognition of his contributions, the Government of Pakistan honored him with the Hilal-e-Imtiaz. Hafeez Jalandhari passed away on December 21, 1982, in Lahore. He was laid to rest near Minar-e-Pakistan, a site that stands as a testament to his patriotism and creative genius.
