A total of 375 out of 654 Pakistani pilgrims stranded at Baghdad Airport have arrived back in Karachi, with the remaining expected to return today afternoon.
The pilgrims were stranded due to technical faults in two Iraq Airways aircraft scheduled to fly them back home. However, efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Aviation, and Pakistan’s Embassy in Iraq have ensured their early repatriation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar directed the Pakistani ambassador in Baghdad to facilitate the stranded pilgrims’ return. The embassy provided meals and temporary accommodations in Baghdad.
The first flight carrying the pilgrims departed Baghdad at 2200 hrs (Iraq local time) or 1200 am PST, with all stranded passengers expected to return by August 31, 2024.
