In a shocking security breach, more than 200 prisoners escaped from Karachi’s District Jail Malir, commonly known as “Bacha Jail,” late last night, triggering a massive search operation across the city.
The jailbreak occurred amid heavy gunfire that echoed throughout the area, spreading panic among nearby residents. According to SSP Malir Kashif Aftab Abbasi, police and Rangers swiftly arrived at the scene, sealing off the jail, National Highway, and adjacent localities to prevent further escapes.
DIG Prisons Hassan Sehto and Sindh Rangers DG Major General Muhammad Shamraiz personally visited the site to assess the situation. Initial reports suggest a series of mild earthquakes earlier in the day may have contributed to the security lapse, as prisoners were brought outside their cells during the tremors.
Taking advantage of the chaos, inmates reportedly turned the jail into a battleground. Prison authorities opened fire in an attempt to regain control, during which five personnel, including FC officers, were injured. Around 216 inmates managed to flee and scattered into nearby residential areas.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar clarified that no walls were breached and over 800 inmates were outside their barracks at the time. Both Lanjar and Sindh Prisons Minister Ali Hassan Zardari have ordered an urgent investigation, demanding detailed reports from IG and DIG Prisons.
So far, over 80 escapees have been re-arrested while two have been confirmed dead. Authorities have also detained nine suspects in connection with the breakout. Search operations continue with tight security at railway stations, bus terminals, nearby villages, and major highways.
In an emotional twist, a video went viral on social media showing the mother of one escaped inmate returning her son to jail voluntarily—a move that drew widespread praise.
Law enforcement is registering cases against the escapees, including charges of jailbreaking and attacking security forces. Police have begun announcing the names of fugitives in mosques across Malir to urge public cooperation.
Officials confirmed that Jail Malir currently houses approximately 6,000 inmates. A detailed headcount and verification process is ongoing to determine the exact number of remaining fugitives.
The Sindh Home Minister has instructed strict accountability for any negligence and demanded a coordinated, intelligence-led effort to recapture all escaped prisoners. While the situation is now reportedly under control, a high-level inquiry into the security failures is underway.
